The desire for a brighter smile has made teeth whitening one of the most frequently requested cosmetic dental procedures. In response to this, many bleaching choices (the good, the bad and the ugly) have become available.

DR NORMAN A CAHI and DR CHELSEA CAHI provide further insight.

While teeth bleaching is marred by controversy in the UK, it is a well-recognised and accepted dental cosmetic procedure here in South Africa, which is strictly controlled by the Health Professionals Council of South Africa (HPCSA). According to the South African Dental Association, only dentists and dental professionals such as oral hygienists and dental therapists who have undergone specific and further training – as well as being proficient and highly experienced in these procedures –
should be carrying them out (and not beauty therapists/spas).
